Newsmy CarPad NU3001 MCU Update

So I was going to update the MCU (the display unit) and got the latest MCU file I could find, which was version 38. I then got a lit but black screen. Notification sounds were still heard though. Dammit!

But fear not.......just downgrade!

Or upgrade, it's up to you. Just get anything else but version 38! It apparently "bricks" your display.

The very first thing you need to do, is to start the Android box and display as usual. I used an external power supply running 13.8 volts (but you could just start it up from your car). Then connect a HDMI / mini-HDMI to an external screen. Both displays will work simultaniously. Also an SD card inserted into the Android box. Oh, and a mouse helps, though touching the display works just as well...

You could use a PC. But the way I did it was searching Google for an alternate version on my mobile. Then extracting the .hex and .bin files to Google Drive. Then opening Google Drive from the CarPad and saving it to the root "/" of the SD card. Ok, just open the update app, flash the MCU and reboot....et voilĂ  !

Android: Setup Unblock-Us VPN Access

If you want to access various streaming services outside of  the US on your (superior) Android device, this is the way to do it. I haven't tested this over WiFi, but it works over the mobile data net (3G, 4G etc.). Watching Hells Kitchen or what-ever on my way to work is pretty ok :)

http://support.unblock-us.com/customer/portal/articles/1556790-how-to-setup-smart-vpn-on-your-android-device

  1. Go to “Wireless and network” settings page
  2. Click on “VPN” or “VPN settings”
  3. Click “Add VPN Network” or “Add VPN” / “Add PPTP VPN”
  4.  You may need to setup PIN, password or pattern for lock screen to store login details
  5. In "Edit VPN Network" window fill up fields as follows:
    • Name: any familiar name (e.g. “Unblock-Us”)
    • Type: “PPTP”
    • Server address: vpn.unblock-us.com
    • Check “PPP encryption” and “Show advanced options”
    • DO NOT put anything in “DNS search domains” or “DNS servers”
    • Forwarding rules: 55.0.0.0/8
  6. Click “Save”
  7. Click on the new VPN connection (e.g. “Unblock-Us”)
  8. Username: your email used for Unblock-Us (same as VPN Username from VPN setup screen)
  9. Password: Enter your VPN password which can be accessed on the Smart VPN setup page. Do not enter your billing password - it will not work.
  10. Check “Save account information” (unless you don't want to store password)
  11. Click “Connect”

Excel: Find & Replace (Long Email Addresses Shortened For AD Use)

Sometimes when users want a distribution list then tend to copy people from an existing list and paste their entire addresses. Fx. Qweasd Rotkju <QWERT@Nortwind.com>. This is a no-go when pasting into the Members pane in Active Directory. It would be better to educate people not to do that, but it's not the quickest. Below is a simple way to remove everything except the "User logon name".

First I copy/paste everything into a txt file and save as test.csv. Then I open the file in Excel. Every address is listed in its own column. Then...

: Mark row 1 :

: Open Replace :

: Type *< and leave Replace With blank . This removes everything up to the user logon name :

: Then type @* and ; in Replace With . This removes everything after @ incl. the @ leaving only the user logon name but with a semi colon. AD likes this uuuhhmmmm yummy it'll chew right up....

BolehVPN - No Internet/Network After Disconnecting VPN

This is beyond me why, but none the less:

First of all I use a static IP address and a google DNS. But after closing BolehVPN and running Windows trouble-shoot, it said that DHCP was disabled. An ipconfig -release didn't work either.

What had happened? The DNS address was erased leaving nothing but blank fields.

So fill in 8.8.8.8 or/and 8.8.4.4 again and bingo..... internet!

Pandora: Listen outside the US etc.

It's simple. Follow my Netflix post!

Ok, just purchase a VPN account and connect your client to the US or purchase a DNS subsription and enter that DNS address into you network settings. I use unblock-us.com.
